Art Statement (Gen Z, Alpha version)
It is an honor to live as a human being. To see and to be seen is also an honor.
Art Statement (Y, X generation + version)
For a long time, I thought I was engaged in many different things. Today, I realize that, in fact, I have always been interested in the same thing: the human being. Not psychology, culture, community, spirituality, or stories separately, but all of them together, in their mystical, tragic, and beautiful complexity.
For four decades, I have been observing how the layers that make up our human reality intertwine. Psychology, culture, spirituality, communal existence, or even generational experiences are different readings of the same story. My work is defined by the endeavor to be present simultaneously within these divergent systems of reference, despite the forces—both external and internal—that seek to separate them…
I believe this kind of attention, this process of absorption and synthesis, is the most significant part of my work. The artworks, projects, and decisions seem almost effortless compared to the intellectual, psychological, and philosophical work. Perhaps that is precisely why they feel “effortless”…
I’m interested in how we live together. What roles we take on, what stories we pass down, how our communities shape us, what parts make up our identity, and how we try to connect, become ourselves, and live amidst all of this.
I live in a unique era. In my work, I shape the emotional imprints of this era. Sometimes I seek out the very specific: the experiences of the digital age, the cultural memory of my generation, the absurdities of our present. Other times, I seek out what is constant: connection, the search for meaning, and the desire for community.
My visual style and worldview are shaped by the animation culture of the 1980s, the turmoil and hope of the 1990s, the digital revolution of the 2000s, the pop psychology of the 2010s, and the uncertainty of the 2020s.
Humor has always been important to me, but year after year I rely on it more and more, because for me, the era of assertions and posturing is over. Thus, I employ humor in its aesthetic and philosophical qualities, which helps facilitate a shift in perspective. It offers an opportunity to take a step back from our certainties and look anew, with curiosity, at ourselves, at one another, and at the era in which we live.
Somethimes I organize art therapy events in connection with my works, turning the exhibition into an experience that can be shared on a community level. This is how I complete the circle of inspiration: I take the inspiration—which comes from the world and from people—process it through myself, and give it back to the community. In our digital age, I consider it particularly important to take action myself against social isolation and the growing divide between generations. Through my work, I make art suitable for this role as well
